What is UMF?



The UMF® Quality Trademark

 

UMF® is an internationally verified and recognised quality trademark. It is backed by an industry quality standard, product traceability, independent audits and a large network of accredited laboratories in New Zealand and around the world. You can be sure that you are buying the genuine product, buying the best quality Manuka honey and that your rights as a consumer are protected when you purchase UMF® Manuka.
 
To carry the UMF® trademark brand, the manufacturer must hold a current UMF® license with the UMFHA (Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association).
 
Any carrier of the UMF® tradement, must have their Manuka Honey comply with these file criteria:
  • UMF® is clearly stated on the front label
  • It is packed into jars and labelled in New Zealand
  • It is from a New Zealand company licensed by UMFHA to use the name UMF®
  • It has the UMF® licensee’s name on the front label
  • It has a rating of UMF® 5+ or more
To receive a UMF® grading, a honey must have the presence of DHA (dihydroxyacetone), Leptosperin, and Methylglyoxal (MGO).
